Fasting Blood Sugar Levels
GLUCAGON IN FASTING
When starving, hormonal glucagon is stimulated, which increases plasma glucose levels FBS in the body.
If the patient has no diabetes, his body will produce insulin to restore the balance of increased glucose levels, says Dr. Slinkin.
However, people with diabetes either don't produce enough insulin to rebalance their blood sugar (usually in type 1 diabetes) or their body is unable to use insulin effectively enough (typical for type 2 diabetes), says Mr. Denis.
Therefore, when blood glucose levels are tested, people with diabetes will have much higher blood sugar levels than people without diabetes.
WHAT'S A BLOOD SUGAR TEST USED FOR AT THE POST?
An on-the-fly blood sugar FBS test is also used to test the efficacy of various drugs or dietary changes in people already diagnosed as diabetic.
The fasting test FBS should be conducted in two separate cases to ensure consistent results and avoid false diagnoses. This is because elevated blood glucose levels may be the result of Cushing's syndrome - liver or kidney disease, eclampsia and pancreatitis/ However, many of these conditions are often identified in laboratory diagnostic tests.
The results of the post test regarding glucose levels FBS in the body are as follows:
Normal: 3.9 to 5.4 mmol/l (70 to 99 mg/dL).
Prediabetic or reduced glucose resistance: 5.5-6.9 mmol/l (100-125 mg/dL)
Diagnosis of diabetes: 7.0 mmol/l (126 mg/dL) or higher .
The American Diabetes Association reduced the diagnosis in this test from 140 to 126 mg/dL in 1997.
